Croatia is one of the most iconic filming locations for the acclaimed television series Game of Thrones. The country’s stunning medieval architecture and breathtaking landscapes served as perfect backdrops for many key scenes in the show.
And the Dalmatian Coast, where we walk in Croatia, is at the heart of it all…
Here are some of the most notable “Game of Thrones” locations in Croatia:
Dubrovnik, a historic coastal city, is perhaps the most recognizable “Game of Thrones” filming location in Croatia. It served as the primary filming location for King’s Landing, the capital of the Seven Kingdoms. With its impressive city walls, red-roofed buildings, and medieval streets, Dubrovnik was a natural fit for the show’s depiction of the political and cultural hub of Westeros.
This imposing fortress just outside Dubrovnik’s city walls stood in for the Red Keep, the residence of the king. Many key scenes, including the tournament in honor of King Joffrey’s name day, were filmed here. Down below in the little fish harbor, they fought the big battle of Blackwater Bay was conquered, when the fleet of Stannis Baratheon’s came to beat king Joffrey.
The entrance to the Old Town of Dubrovnik appeared as the site where King Robert Baratheon arrives in King’s Landing.
This grand staircase became the setting for Cersei Lannister’s infamous Walk of Shame.
The city of Split, with its ancient Roman architecture, still vibrant and alive today was a natural as a location in Game of Thrones.
This UNESCO World Heritage site transformed into Daenerys Targaryen’s throne room in Meereen. The palace’s cellars were the dungeons where Daenerys kept her dragons.
Overlooking Split, this fortress represented the city of Meereen. The fortress’s panoramic views provided stunning backdrops for many scenes involving Daenerys and her army.
The production team chose the medieval town of Šibenik to depict the Free City of Braavos, one of the richest and most powerful cities in the series.
This magnificent Gothic-Renaissance cathedral became the exterior of the Iron Bank of Braavos, a critical location where characters like Stannis Baratheon and Davos Seaworth travel to secure funding for their military campaigns.
Just a short boat ride from Dubrovnik, Lokrum Island portrayed the city of Qarth, which Daenerys visits in the second season.
HBO gave the original Iron Throne to the city of Dubrovnik, and today it is inside the Visitors Centre on Lokrum Island. Iron Throne replicas can be found in Dubrovnik Old Town and inside Diocletian’s Palace in Split.
The Benedictine Monastery on the island served as the location for the House of the Undying, where Daenerys retrieves her stolen dragons.
