Island walks, sleepy ports, coastal life

CCroatia has such a rich history as part of the Roman and Byzantine empires it’s no wonder the Dalmatian Coast is a feast of spectacular ancient towns. And the myriad islands dotting the coast are surely among Europe’s prettiest.
We’ll be island-hopping to three of the loveliest of them, but not before we’ve discovered Dubrovnik, the Adriatic’s Pearl, where, within its city walls, red-tiled roofs, steep, narrow passageways and beautiful old churches, make it a real gem indeed.
On this coast, dubbed “the Mediterranean as it used to be”, sleepy villages overlook that clear blue water; walking trails lead where little or no traffic ruffles the peace and quiet.
We stop along the way to visit Emperor Diocletian’s wonderful palace in Split, marvel at the “Great Wall of Europe” in Ston and on Brač island venture to the jaw-dropping, and oh-so-remote, hermitage monastery of Braca.

    Highlights

    • See the Mediterranean as it used to be
    • Spend the night in the old cities of Dubrovnik, Split and Hvar
    • Explore the islands of Lopud, Hvar and Brač
    • Visit Blaca Monastery and Emperor Diocletian's Palace
    • Enjoy Croatia's mouth-watering fresh seafood
    Itinerary

    Day 1 Meet in Dubrovnik

Meet at our hotel for a guided walk through Dubrovnik, followed by some free time before our Welcome Reception and Dinner at a local restaurant.
    Dubrovnik, Hotel Excelsior

    Day 2

A morning boat trip takes us to explore the lovely island of Lopud. We head back to the mainland via Ston, to walk along its dramatic medieval walls. We’ll pass ancient salt pans still in operation, before continuing to our hotel in Mali Ston, a sleepy village of old stone houses.
    Mali Ston, Hotel Ostrea

    Day 3

This morning, a scenic drive leads to the ferry at Drvenik, and onward to the resort island of Hvar. We walk from the ancient hilltop village of Velo Grablje, with its stone houses, famous for its lavender and olive oil. A dry brook serves as our path to Malo Grablje, a local curiosity, then lunch in a remote family run tavern. Tonight, we’ll stay at a spa hotel overlooking Hvar harbor.
    Hvar, Adriana Hvar Spa Hotel

    Day 4

After a short drive across the isle of Hvar to our drop off point on Humac Hill, we enjoy stunning views of the neighboring islands and the Stari Grad Plain World Heritage Site. We gradually make our way down to the picturesque gorge village of Pitve for lunch at a family run tavern known for its organic homemade specialties. From here we continue to Hvar town for some free time and a late-afternoon Croatian cooking class followed by dinner.
    Hvar, Adriana Hvar Spa Hotel

    Day 5

A private speedboat takes us to Brač, where we begin our slow ascent alongside terraced stone walls to Skrip, the oldest settlement on the island. After a visit, head through open fields to a family home for an unforgettable ‘farm to table’ lunch. This afternoon, walk past vineyards and olive groves to Supetar.
    Supetar, Villa Vela Luka

    Day 6

Drive to the famous Vidova Gora mountaintop, then walk down the gorge to the remote Blaca Monastery. A local guide explains its fascinating history. We’ll continue to an isolated bay by day’s end, where a private boat awaits to take us to a secluded terrace restaurant overlooking the sea.
    Supetar, Villa Vela Luka

    Day 7

The morning ferry takes us to Split, a vibrant city with the palace of Roman Emperor Diocletian at its heart. We explore the palace and Old Town before our Farewell Dinner.
    Split, Hotel Marmont

    Day 8Transfer to Split Airport

Enjoy the excellent shopping and sightseeing independently in Split before making your way to the airport.

What I loved about the Walk was the boat lunch and transfer with the guitar player. The Konoba dinner in Supetar, (obviously food obsessed). Ston and the walk near Ston, as well as the hotel which was very charming. All the island villages, as well as Hvar, Split, and Dubrovnik of course, were just lively.

Our flight was delayed and connecting airport changed at the last minute. When we arrived late in Dubrovnik, I had phone messages advising us to please contact Wayfaring Walks as we had not been on the original flight. I emailed and said we would taxi to the hotel, but instead we were met within 10 minutes by your driver. He was extremely personable and gave us such a wonderful introduction to the area and everything we were seeing even though it was dark.
