Carved stone antiquities and hidden gorges

We’re on the trail of the enigmatic Etruscans in the dreamy Tuscan hills. These exceptional, mysterious, ancient people are still tantalizing us with their treasures.
From imposing Orvieto, via the huge cave settlement of Vitozza, to the jewel that is Pitigliano, with its medieval streets and Jewish quarter, this Walk is time-traveling through 5,000 years of European history. Think painted tombs, sunken roads and labyrinthine caves and tunnels.
And on the way, of course, we sample local delicacies and crisp local wines in traditional restaurants frequented as much by locals as travellers. We discover a local organic farm which hosts us lunch and visit a winery still making wines in amphorae as did the ancient Romans!

    Itinerary

    Sunday Meet in Orvieto

Meet for an afternoon walk through Orvieto, an Etruscan city set on a mass of volcanic tufa rock, with stunning views of the Umbrian countryside. Visit the highly decorated 13th-century Duomo and the labyrinth of Etruscan caves and tunnels carved below the city. After the tour, it’s a short drive to our stunning resort.
Castel Giorgio, Borgo la Chiaracia Resort & Spa

    Monday

From the hotel, follow the 13th century aqueduct up along a woodland trail overlooking Orvieto, and gain insight into the ancient Etruscan culture. Accompanied by a local expert, we’ll walk on a shady dirt road lined with elegant villas and farmhouses to the well preserved Hescanas tomb. Afterwards, walk to an organic farm for a wonderful lunch of fresh regional delicacies. Before returning to the hotel, stop to see Civita di Bagnoregio, a hilltop town, perched on a pinnacle of eroding rock.
Castel Giorgio, Borgo la Chiaracia Resort & Spa

    Tuesday

Start the day with a short drive to San Lorenzo Nuovo, to join ‘via Francigena’ the old Roman pilgrims’ trail that once connected Canterbury to Rome. Views of the undulating landscape offer a spectacular backdrop as we make our way to Lake Bolsena, the largest volcanic lake in Europe. We’ll have a private boat tour of the lake.
Castel Giorgio, Borgo la Chiaracia Resort & Spa

    Wednesday

Leaving Castel Giorgio for Sovana, we enter a landscape of green craggy hills, narrow plateaus and deep volcanic gorges. We spend the morning walking to Vitozza, one of the largest cave settlements in Italy with over 200 cave dwellings. After a visit, walk down to the River Lente, and follow the river through woodlands to Sorano, a village set on a large cliff and dominated by the Orsini Fortress. Tour the fortress’ underground passageways before driving back to our hotel in Sovana.

    Thursday

After visiting the pretty medieval center of Sovana, a short walk leads down to the archeological park. This area was claimed by the Etruscans thousands of years ago who cut and chiseled the tufo rock to create narrow, soaring pathways leading to sacred burial chambers and necropolises decorated with columns and sculptures. Spend the morning here with a local guide before enjoying a picnic lunch. After lunch we will walk to a local winery that, in addition to modern wine production, also experiments with producing wines in the same cocciopesto wine amphorae used by ancient Romans.
    Sovana, Hotel Sovana

    Friday

Walk in the footsteps of the Etruscans along rural trails and ancient passages to Pitigliano, a jewel set on high tufa cliffs overlooking the countryside. We explore the medieval streets and Jewish quarter with time to explore and maybe taste some of its exemplary white wines. Farewell Dinner tonight.

ITALIAN HILLTOP TOWNS, WALKING TOUR – This Etruscan Tuscany walk was unlike any other vacation experience we’ve ever had. It was more than just a hike; it was a journey through time and a chance to see a part of Italy that most tourists miss. Our tour was in the Fall and the weather was mild. We walked along ancient trails that have been used for centuries, through stone-cut paths that felt like stepping back in time. The medieval towns jutting out from rocks were like something out of a fairytale, and the farm visits and tastings of local foods gave us a real taste of Tuscan culture.

What truly set this walk apart was the feeling of being completely immersed in nature. We were surrounded by rolling hills, vineyards, and olive groves, and while walking the only sounds we could hear were the birds and the wind rustling. It was a complete escape from tourist towns. And we encountered very few other people on the paths

I would highly recommend this tour to anyone who is looking for an unforgettable vacation. It’s perfect for hikers, history buffs, and anyone who wants to get off the beaten path and explore the real Italy. Our tour guides were incredibly knowledgeable about the area and shared fascinating insights about Etruscan history and culture. It was a one-of-a-kind experience and the customer service was truly amazing!!!
