We’ve long loved Portugal.  Definitely a stand-out for its diverse landscapes, from golden beaches to rolling vineyards, to its deep maritime history. Friendly and hospitable locals, really great food, not to mention a rich cultural heritage. The blend of  Moorish, Roman, and European influences, creates a uniquely captivating charm.

On the mainland, the Algarve Coast offers spectacular golden beaches, dramatic cliffs, and charming coastal towns.

The Azores are known for their volcanic landscapes, lush greenery, hot springs, and isolated beauty. Dotted plumb in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, just shy of 1,000 miles from Lisbon, these are, quite simply, a string of island jewels, just waiting to be discovered.

The Azores – untouched, unhurried and unforgettable

It was only a matter of time before we devised perhaps the perfect island Walk – in The Azores.

With all that’s wonderful about Portugal combined with a uniquely beautiful landscape, climate and geology, no wonder it’s sometimes referred to as the “Hawaii of Europe.”

Our Azores adventure takes us to São Miguel, the largest and most diverse of the islands. Here volcanic landscapes meet rich marine life. Imagine hiking through vibrant forests, past bubbling geysers. Or along the rim of craters, where panoramic views stretch across the endless Atlantic.

A boat ride into the deep blue…

One morning, we trade our hiking boots for a boat ride into the deep blue. Dolphins may dance beside us, and whales make awe-inspiring appearances—an unforgettable, close encounter with nature.

But the Azores’ charm doesn’t end with natural beauty. São Miguel is home to Europe’s only tea plantation. We wander through rolling green hills of tea fields, breathing in the fresh scent of leaves, and learn the age-old tradition of tea-making. We also visit unique pineapple greenhouses, where this tropical fruit flourishes in a way we won’t find anywhere else.

Colourful markets, ancient churches

In Ponta Delgada, the capital, history blends with modern vibrancy as we stroll through its streets. Wander through ancient churches, colorful markets, and parks rich with botanical treasures.

Topped with the unmistakable flavor of Portuguese cuisine, infused with an island twist, every meal is a feast for the senses. Fresh seafood, local cheeses, and delicious Azorean specialties will fuel our adventures – delicious!

The Algarve – coastline with a capital C!

If you’re fond of sand dunes and salty air, our Walk in Portugal homes in on a very special area – the western end of the Algarve coast and its rural hinterland.

Once far west as could be imagined, this is a world away from busy resorts and cities and where old Portugal still exists.

We get a real sense of Portuguese life and culture here where stunning seascapes, rich history, and nature blend seamlessly.

Charming fishing villages

Explore charming, colorful fishing villages and indulge in the region’s delicious cuisine, all while spotting a variety of vibrant birdlife.

Our inland adventure takes us to the summit of Mount Foia, the Algarve’s highest peak, where we’ll enjoy a scenic picnic with breathtaking panoramic views.

Yet, the ocean is never far from view. The dramatic Seven Hanging Valleys trail hugs the coastline. It leads us through a landscape where the sea has sculpted magnificent arches, hidden caverns, and deep gorges over millennia. Along this journey, we’ll stop at Ponta da Piedade. Here towering rock formations rise above crystal-clear waters, offering some of the most stunning views in the Algarve.

A trip to the edge of the world

And for a truly unforgettable experience, we’ll spend a full day at the legendary Cape St. Vincent. Once thought to be the edge of the known world. Standing on its towering cliffs, where Europe meets the vast Atlantic, we’ll understand why explorers believed this to be the world’s end. That is, until the Americas were discovered beyond the horizon!

On the menu: the very freshest fish (the freshly grilled sardines here are a simple, but divine pleasure.) Or smell the aromas from a huge clam-shaped copper cataplana, bubbling with a traditional seafood, potato and spicy sausage stew. And with our coffee, a pastel de nata, a classic Portuguese custard tart with buttery pastry and a hint of cinnamon and lemon.
