Hadrian’s Wall and the Lake District
Simply unforgettable – a potent mix of epic World Heritage Site history and simply stunning scenery makes our Walk in England’s most northerly regions an absolute classic.
Discover the Roman marvel that is Hadrian’s Wall and awe-inspiring Lake District vistas in Northumberland and Cumbria.
History, drama, romance and the freshest of fresh air combine here to make this an experience to treasure.
Come time-traveling…We’ll be walking in the footsteps of hardy Roman legionnaires to discover that Emperor Hadrian’s famous Wall was a rich and vibrant place. Work started some 1900 years ago on this extraordinary defensive barrier against the “barbarians” from further north.
This year marks 20 years since the 80-mile Hadrian’s Wall National Trail was opened and we’ll be seeing the best of it in the high, wild country that nudges the Scottish border.
This Roman legacy, a knobbly line of immaculate masonry, boasted 16 forts, 80 milecastles and 240 watchtowers, as well as dozens of bridges, flanked by ditches and earthworks.
Here archaeologists are still peeling back the layers of 400 years of Roman rule in Britain and turning up treasure after treasure.
We’ll trek through wild, unpopulated country, climbing low fells and high crags, crossing open moorland and following remote bridleways.
And onwards, to luxuriate in the radiant beauty of the English Lakes and hushed mountain scenery that has inspired writers, poets and painters for generations.
We can’t think of a better place to be than up on the fells, wandering the lakeshores or riding the ferry across stunning Lake Windermere.
From ambles around lakes to high ridge walks, the picturesque patchwork of lakes, valleys, woodlands and fells make this National Park one of the best places in Britain to get out and experience the great outdoors.
We visit Beatrix Potter’s garden at Hill Top and walk the paths of the Romantic poets around Grasmere, Wordsworth’s favorite lake, paying a visit to his family home at Dove Cottage and his final residence at Rydal Mount.
As they say: “You may leave the Lake District, but once you’ve been, it’ll never leave you…”
